It is with a heavy heart that we write this note about the passing of Neal Patterson. After a hard-fought battle with cancer that began in January of 2016, Neal passed away on July 9th.
He taught us to be bold and embrace the complex. Neal, together with Jeanne and Cliff, did just that when they created First Hand Foundation as the soul of Cerner. Through their brilliant vision, First Hand leverages Cerner technology, associates’ talent and our partner relationships. Together, we’ve changed the lives of over 300,000 individuals in 93 countries.
This new model of corporate philanthropy comes from the same entrepreneurial spirit that is the framework for Cerner, Sporting Kansas City and the American Royal. Neal especially loved being able to use Cerner technology to help more people through First Hand and to allow associates to give back to their communities.
Neal has always had a passion and drive for transforming health and care. It is only natural that the foundation is an extension of this same passion and drive.
He was very proud of the work that his wife, Jeanne, led over the last 22 years at the foundation. He always said one of his favorite days of the year was watching her introduce and getting to meet the children at the annual golf tournament.
We are so thankful that he and Jeanne were both able to attend the 2017 tournament, making it a perfect day.
Please join us in thoughts and prayers for Jeanne, Clay, Lindsey, Cortney, Will, and the entire Patterson family and friends. Neal’s legacy will live on forever at First Hand.
We love you, Neal …

Cerner Charitable Foundation understands that healthy students make better learners. However, life circumstances can ultimately keep children from accessing essential healthcare and developing their full health potential. Through our school health and wellness programs, we strive to close the gaps in care.
